In Episode 17, we talk about Ober Gatlinburg and our Spotlight Hike of the Week, Clingmans Dome. We also discuss our Tip of the Day, and News From Around the Mountains.
Ober Gatlinburg is one of the most popular attraction in Gatlinburg, and in the Smoky Mountains. It boasts a ton of stuff to do including skiing, snowboarding, tubing, ice skating, alpine slides, a carrousel, scenic chair lift, a maze, water slides and rides, arcade, and wildlife encounters. Prices vary greatly from attraction to attraction, so check out their website for current pricing and deals before you come. Some attractions are also only open during winter or summer, so be sure to check that out before you come. Grabbing your skis in summer would be a mistake.
Clingmans Dome is the tallest point in the Smokies and along the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail. It is one of the busiest parts of the park as well. The access road, Clingmans Dome Road, is closed from December 1-March 31, however, Clingmans Dome is open year round. If the 7 mile road is closed, you can walk the road or the Appalachain Trail from Newfound Gap to get there. The .5 mile paved hike to the top of the observation tower is easy, but steep. There are benches along the way if you need a place to rest. The views can literally be anywhere from 10 feet to over a hundred miles depending on the weather. The 360 degree observation tower is wonderful. Plan on coming during off-peak times to avoid throngs and throngs of people.
